Short Term Courses – Matte Painting And Digital Set Creation

Short Term Courses – Matte Painting And Digital Set Creation

Duration : 6 Months / 8 Hrs. a week

A matte painting is a painted representation of a landscape, set, or distant location that allows filmmakers to create the illusion of an environment that would otherwise be too expensive to build or visit. Historically, matte painters and film technicians have used various techniques to combine a matte-painted image with live-action footage. At its best, depending on the skill levels of the artists and technicians, the effect is “seamless” and creates environments that would otherwise be impossible to film.

Matte Painting fundamentals : The typical lifespan of a matte painting starts with concept art and a plate, then proceeds through the approval and the animatic (rough animation visualization) stages. Next the high-res matte painting is started and soon it moves on to pre-comps and the final composite. Usually the Compositor (sometimes the Matte Artist) will wedge the shot and in conjunction with the Visual Effects Supervisor, choose final values. Then the shot is filmed-out and ultimately approved by the Director.

Designing a rough layout in Photoshop : Most film work is done in an aspect ratio of eit her 2.35 or 1.85. Start from a roug h line drawing. Start from a roug h line drawing.

Importing and manuplating photo scrap : Start out by importing your first image and using this image as your base for the color palette of the rendering.

Creating CG elements : Often architectural elements are created with CG models for matte paintings. The artist can then paint on top of the CG render and implement different painting techniques throughout the creation of the matte painting.

Foreground Vegetation : Using photographic elements to help enhance the CG vegetation can make it appear more realistic.

Final Touches : Sometimes distant water and reflections can be left as static elements and it may not be needed to animate these features. Particles can be used to create many effects to help bring life to your matte paintings. Waterfalls, snow and rain are just some of the animated features created for matte paintings. Getting familiar with some of these simpler particle techniques can be beneficial.
